Deer Isle

In case you thought you had come a long way before arriving at the Retreat, take another leisurely drive down to the end of Route 15 in Stonington. Here you'll be looking south in Penobscot and Jerico Bays and have traversed an island with a rich heritage connected to the arts and to the sea.

People here celebrate the time they have been on the island without having to go to 'off island,' and that gives Deer Isle the character of a place from maybe the 1950's.

Haystack Main DeckThis is a great place for birding, walks, kayaks, galleries and crafts — anyone who lovescreativity, nature and the great outdoors.

Take a drive perhaps to Sunshine at the Eastern tip, perhaps to visit the exclusive Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (shown above).

Studios and galleries are found everywhere and you might be especially interested in Red Dot Gallery, the Blue Heron Gallery, Nervous Nellie's Jams and Jellies, or the Geoffrey Warner Studio.

Grab your lunch at Lily's Cafe in Stonington right on Route 15 at the Airport Road. If you can stand the crowd they serve a wonderful Sunday brunch too. The Fisherman's Friend in Stonington serves local fare and atmosphere.;

The mailboat leaves daily for Isle au Haut where you can stop off in the village or go to the bit of Acadia National Park located in Duck Harbor. Their website will give you the information you need.
